learn to design & knit your own aran sweater

You may have seen pictures of women knitting Aran sweaters but you have never seen them with a pattern on their knees. Once they have set up the first pattern row they follow the design right through. They rarely use cable needles as this slows up the work.

This course is not really for the new beginner to knitting. You need to be “fluent” at garter stitch, stocking stitch, rib etc. before you will enjoy mastering the cables, diamonds and various twists of Aran Knitting. Aran designs in general are only worked on the front of the piece of knitting - the back being “follow stitches”. I will show you these as we go through the lessons. There are a few exceptions to this, namely the Blackberry stitch, sometimes called Trinity stitch, Single Moss (Seed Stitch) and the Spoon design.

To relax and enjoy Aran Knitting you must learn this way so that you do not have the stress of marking patterns for every row. My Irish knitters enjoy company or watch television while their knitting grows. We chart the shaping separately so as not to confuse the design.

We hope you will find the course so interesting that you will send us a photograph of your own unique Aran sweater or jacket.
